Side Hustle Review: Nappy Gappy Inc. Hand Made Jewelry with Darrian

Hello Hello F22 Crew!

It is my pleasure to introduce to you someone from my past, who is kicking butt and taking names in all parts of her life. Darrian is the brains, and beauty, behind Nappy Gappy inc.- a hand made jewelry business that celebrates individuality and fun designs! I’ve known Darrian since we were preteens, and recently reconnected over Facebook. I’ll let her tell you her story and how Nappy Gappy got started, but seriously this lady is a registered Nurse and a business owner, what can’t she do?!

Tell us about you and your company!

NappyGappy Inc is a jewelry and accessory company with products made for those who want to stand out from the crowd.

How did you get started?

Honestly it was all an accidental blessing. I went to hobby lobby one day looking for a hobby to help with my anxiety from the pandemic. When I posted my work, I received multiple messages from friends and family wanting my products. I made over 400 dollars in the first two weeks and knew I was onto something special.

Note from Mar; Isn’t is so fucking cool when your friends and family rise to the occasion to support you? We love it!

What is your favorite part of running your company?

Having the chance to express myself through my jewelry. I also love the enthusiasm people have when they see my products, it really makes me feel special.

What is your least favorite?

Definitely the taxes and business organization things… still learning how everything works.

I know you’re a new business owner, is there anything you’re afraid of or apprehensive of?

I would say failure .. but I’m not someone who fails. If I do, I learn and grow from it. So technically nothing is ever a
failure to me. Loooooove that!

How do you come up with your designs?

I lay out all of my tools and craft making items, and brainstorm! Its all from my head.

You’re pretty open about racial issues on Social Media. Does your stance play into the demographic spread of your customers? Has anyone said mean things to you?

For sure. It is always a blessing to break stigmas and stereotypes in the current racial climate of our country. Thankfully I consider most of my
products to appeal to people of all races and backgrounds. In regards to my jewelry I have not had anything negative said to me. In regards to my race I have had some hurtful things said to me, and here lately my nerves have been high with the election outcome and racial climate.

Who doesn’t love beautiful jewelry paired with rainbows? Swoon!

Talk to me about what people skills are needed for this job!

You need to love what you do, love yourself, and spread the love to your customers so they learn to love themselves as well.

What would you say to someone who wants to embark on a similar journey to you?

Just do it! Be patient. Its all your journey and your timeline. Nobody else’s.

If this makes enough to support you full time, will you switch from being a nurse to a full time business owner? Why or why not?

I’ve thought about this question a lot. I love being a nurse and the lessons it brings me, but if my business were to bring in enough to make a fine living for myself and family… would be something I would consider.

If you could do any other job in the world, what would it be and why?

A job that I don’t have to call a job. Happiness and securing my self purpose is my goal.
